New Innovation Centre Opens at Doosan Campus in Dobris

Waterloo, Belgium - Doosan Infracore Bobcat Holding (DIBH) has opened the new Innovation Centre at the company’s facility in Dobris in the Czech Republic. The new Innovation Centre is now part of the Doosan Campus at Dobris, which integrates R&D with manufacturing, sourcing and training on the same site in a unique combination that Doosan believes will help the company become World Number One in the compact equipment market.

The opening ceremony for the Innovation Centre was hosted by Jose Cuadrado, Vice President for Compact Equipment in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), who welcomed Scott Park, President and CEO of Doosan Infracore Bobcat Holdings (DIBH), and Martin Knoetgen, President of DIBH’s business in EMEA.  The event was also attended by the Korean Ambassador for the Czech Republic, His Excellency Ambassador Hayong Moon.

Jose Cuadrado said: “The new Innovation Centre demonstrates the long-term commitment of Doosan and the bold decisions taken by the company when Europe and the rest of the world were experiencing a pronounced economic downturn, investing in people and innovative industrial and business solutions around the world.  By integrating every part of our operations and product development on one site from engineering and design, sourcing, manufacturing, marketing, aftermarket and distribution to training for our EMEA dealers and customers, the Doosan Campus will bring enormous benefits in every part of our business.”

Global Technology Leadership

Scott Park commented: “As one of the world’s largest construction equipment developers and manufacturers, we are committed to achieving technological leadership by heavily investing in R&D globally.  The new Dobris Innovation Centre is part of our global network of R&D centres.  It was built in parallel with new R&D Centres in Incheon in Korea and the Acceleration Centre at Bismarck in the USA, involving over $100 million of total investment.

“We built this facility to be an integral part of the Dobris and central Bohemia environment, and we want to be an excellent neighbour to the people of Dobris.  We have already demonstrated this through our cooperation with the city of Dobris as well as on our regular community days, where we focus on giving back.  The Dobris campus is one of the cornerstones of Doosan’s global success and we plan to keep our commitments to the future and continue to grow in this region.”

Ambassador Hayong Moon reinforced this when he spoke about the close cooperation between Korea and the Czech Republic which is being demonstrated by companies like Doosan, with business ventures in a wide range of different markets in the Czech Republic.

Martin Knoetgen added:  “We are developing the Dobris Innovation Centre as a European Engineering Centre of Excellence, which will serve as an expert R&D centre for all Doosan engineering teams across Europe and take responsibility for small loaders and compact excavators from 1-3 tonne.

“Dobroslav Rak, Vice President Engineering EMEA, who headed up and was the driving force behind this project, convinced senior management and I about the direct benefits and strategic importance, as well as the competitive advantage and unique proposition it offers.”

The New Innovation Centre

The new Innovation Centre focuses on creating new innovative solutions, product development, research and testing activities.  The new facility, with more than 8000 m2 of floor space for prototyping and testing and 1400 m2 of office area, is a location where new advanced - and in some cases – unique technologies are installed.

The new facility houses integrated cross-functional product development teams consisting of product management, product engineering, test laboratory, advanced analysis, reliability growth, prototype shop, compact NPD functions as well as supplier development and sourcing.  New complex test laboratories have been built for product validation ensuring a high level of performance, reliability and durability for Doosan and Bobcat products.

State-of-the-art technology includes modern prototype shop machinery including rapid prototyping, climate-controlled laboratories for extreme conditions tests, static and dynamic test facilities and a new noise test chamber with unique parameters which will ensure that Doosan continues to develop top-class compact construction machines under the Doosan and Bobcat brands.

Jose Cuadrado continued:  “There are many advantages from the integration of activities at Dobris including much faster product development cycles which will mean that we can shorten the duration of projects in some cases by half.  Our Innovation center in Dobris is connected to another 2 centers in Bismarck (USA) and Inchon (Korea). While each center is focused on developing solutions for the local markets, the 3 share a technology roadmap that allow us to coordinate our most advance projects when it comes to Research and Innovation. We believe Innovation is what will get us to Nr. 1 in Compact Equipment worldwide.”

Martin Knoetgen added: “Our mission in Dobris is to introduce a new culture and principle for product development processes, bringing efficiency improvement and the new Innovation Centre, with its environment and advanced technologies, is key to effecting this change.  All new products and results of research activities at the Innovation Centre are immediately applied in production at the Dobris manufacturing facility, as a result of the cross-functional collaborative space across Engineering, Sourcing, Production and other support teams.  We plan to grow Dobris production by 75%, so we have also started a manufacturing facility expansion project to enhance our manufacturing capability for compact machines.”
