B.A.K Civil Engineering Limited, the groundwork and civil engineering contractor based at Altrincham in Cheshire, has purchased new Doosan DX80R and DX35Z compact excavators from Norwest Plant Ltd, the Authorised Doosan and Bobcat dealer for North-West England and North Wales.

The new Doosan excavators have been purchased for a prestigious civils contract B.A.K is carrying out on behalf of main contractor, Galliford Try, on the latest phase of the Soapworks development, the largest single office building project currently under way in Manchester.

Dave Keegan, Managing Director of B.A.K Civil Engineering, said: “We have been purchasing Daewoo and Doosan excavators since 2001, dealing with Chris Proctor and the team handling the Doosan brand at Plantlink before its acquisition by Norwest Plant last year. All the Doosan excavators have always given us excellent performance, even though some of them are over 10 years old. With Chris and the team on-board, Norwest Plant has ensured excellent continuity of service for former Plantlink customers like ourselves."

“Even though we opened up the bidding for the new machine order to the wider market, Norwest Plant was still able to put together the best package backed by excellent finance arrangements. In addition, the resale values of the Doosan machines exceeded our depreciation forecasts, making the package even more attractive.”

Forming part of the exciting regeneration of the Manchester city centre, the Soapworks development is set to become an iconic building within the office market in North West England. Based on the site of the former Colgate Palmolive plant in the heart of Salford Quays, the project involves a redevelopment/remodelling of the buildings on the site to provide approximately 500,000 sq ft of high quality but cost-effective and flexible office accommodation with the benefit of a full range of on-site facilities.

The site comprises approximately 8.5 acres including a substantial amount of on-site car parking space, with the Exchange Quay Metrolink station and various bus routes easily accessible by foot. Phase 1 of the project - the 20,000 sq ft Boilerhouse - has been fully let. The B.A.K contract forms part of the next phase of construction which will result in over 200,000 sq ft of new office space and is scheduled for completion in the middle of 2014.

Incorporating the full demolition specification, the new Doosan DX80R and DX35Z excavators will be used on a range of applications from breaking concrete in the standing and basement areas to digging and trenching work to build external services for the new development.

Dave Keegan added: “Because they have passed the test of time again and again, Doosan excavators have a predominant presence in our machine fleet.”

A specialist in commercial, retail, local authority and private sector project work, B.A.K Civil Engineering offers clients a complete package of labour, plant and materials. As well as having a skilled and qualified workforce, the company owns and operates all its own plant.

With the belief that the company always offer the ‘right tool for the job’, B.A.K can boast an impressive portfolio of plant and equipment ranging from micro to 30 tonne excavators as well as dumpers, rollers, compactors, lifting equipment and cutting equipment. To complement the plant fleet, the company also has an extensive commercial vehicle fleet.

As the Authorised Doosan and Bobcat dealer for North-West England and North Wales, Norwest Plant covers Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside (including the Wirral), Cheshire, Anglesey, North Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham.
